Never Forget

Never Forget

This is just a short post to remember this day 19 years ago. I looked back over my blog and saw that I have never posted about 9/11 and I think I have been remiss. Some people want to forget it ever happened. I am not one of those people. I will never forget, and I don’t think anyone should. This is not a political post. It’s a post to remember that horrific day and to honor the heroes that answered the call to help. Some of those heroes gave the ultimate price of their lives in their efforts to protect others. That’s the main thing I want to remember.

I’ve lit a candle every year on this day since 9/11/2002 and I have watched United 93 every year since it came out five years after, except for one time when I was out to sea supporting a Naval exercise. I watch this movie because I am in awe of the sacrifice those passengers made. Despite any differences, they came together to fight evil, and while their efforts ultimately fell short of saving their own lives, how many other lives did they save by preventing that plane from reaching its target? I only hope that if the day ever comes that I am called on to make that choice, I can muster up the courage to do it.

If you have never seen the movie, I encourage you to watch it. It’s heartbreaking and it will hurt. That is a good thing. It should do that. It will also make you proud to know that people like this still exist. I am a big burly man and this movie never fails to produce a tear or two (or much more) from my eyes. If you choose to watch it you’ll see what I mean.

  1. I can’t believe I’ve never seen it, not sure how that happened… but I’ll make a point of it now.
I watched the Twin Towers being built as a kid. Have many fond memories of walking by with my father and being awed. Someday, we’ll get back down to see the memorial and have a good cry.
    I’ll never forget either.
    😰

    1. It’s a great movie. I’ll be watching it soon.

Of the three major memorials I’ve only visited the Pentagon on a DC trip my wife and I took, and the Flight 93 crash site when I was driving back from Chicago after seeing my son graduate from Navy boot camp. My wife also went to Ground Zero on a NYC trip with her mom and sister but she hasn’t seen the Flight 93 memorial. With our mobile lifestyle now, I am sure we will both add the last one to our itinerary.

  2. I’ve never seen United 93 but I should. I’m going to watch it now.
September 11th, 2001 is not a day I’ll ever forget, nor do I want to forget it. It was a terrible day but what I remember is how much good it brought out in so many people–especially the rescuers who ran into those buildings to save as many lives as they could, but I think about small acts of kindness too. I was at work and a bunch of us crowded around a TV in the office next door. There was a woman I’d never seen before–she worked in that office but somehow we’d never passed in the hallway–on her cell phone trying to reach her daughter who worked in one of the towers. We all offered her sympathy and support.
We learned later that day that her daughter had gotten out and was safe.
That kindness was nothing compared to the bravery of the police and firefighters and other emergency responders that day but we do what we can in the circumstances we’re given, and I never want to forget that on a terrible day the people who did good.

    1. That’s awesome Chris. It was great that everyone came together that day regardless of their different beliefs. It’s too bad we can’t have an event that would accomplish that in these times without loss of life.
